Alvaro Gomez-Lopez, a 34-year-old resident of Roca, has been charged with felony child abuse and has also been cited for third-degree sexual assault. Authorities believe that Gomez-Lopez entered the United States illegally around February. They further allege that he paid for his daughter to be transported from Guatemala on or around July 16, and subsequently made her feel indebted to him.
Law enforcement officials assert that Gomez-Lopez subjected his daughter to starvation and excessive labor, with the intention of forcing her to repay the debt incurred for her transportation. While they did not provide specific details about the abuse, they did confirm that the victim was subjected to sexual contact.

"The victim also reported that food had been withheld from her for five days prior to contact with Sheriff's Deputies," stated the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office in a press release.
The investigation into this case was initiated after an employee of Church World Service alerted the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office about the abuse on Monday morning. The social worker informed deputies that Gomez-Lopez's daughter had reached out to their organization to report the physical and sexual abuse she had endured.

Later that evening, Gomez-Lopez was arrested without incident at his residence. Following his arrest, his daughter underwent a forensic interview before being handed over to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Gomez-Lopez is currently being held at the Lancaster County Adult Detention Facility.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office are actively investigating the case.
