Seattle police are hailing the bravery of a woman who managed to escape from a cinderblock cell after being kidnapped by a man impersonating an undercover police officer.

The terrifying ordeal began on July 15 when 29-year-old Negasi Zuberi picked up a prostitute from a known sex work area in Seattle, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Oregon.

After engaging in sexual acts with the woman, Zuberi allegedly claimed to be an undercover officer, brandished a badge, and placed her in handcuffs and leg irons before forcing her into his vehicle. He then drove her for seven hours to his home in Klamath Falls, Oregon, sexually assaulting her along the way.

Upon arrival, he confined her in a cinderblock cell he had constructed in his garage, secured with a door made of metal bars, and informed her that he needed to complete some paperwork.

Realizing the imminent danger she was in, the woman began punching at the metal door in an attempt to escape, as reported by the FBI. She managed to break some of the door's welded joints, creating a small opening through which she was able to slip out of the cell.

Spotting Zuberi's car in the garage, the victim seized a gun that was inside and made her escape from the residence. She flagged down a passing driver who promptly called 911 for assistance.

The following day, Nevada State Patrol officers located Zuberi in a parking lot at a Reno Walmart, accompanied by his wife and child. They attempted to apprehend him, but a 45-minute standoff ensued during which the suspect inflicted self-harm and tried to destroy his phone. Eventually, Zuberi surrendered and was taken into custody by the police.

During the investigation, authorities discovered the cinderblock cell at Zuberi's residence, along with the victim's purse. Handwritten notes, believed to outline Zuberi's alleged plan, were also found.

One note read, "Make sure they don't have a bunch of ppl [sic] in their life. You don't want any type of investigation."
