When asked about Newsom's offer by Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, DeSantis responded, "Absolutely, I'm game. Let's get it done, tell me when and where, we'll do it." DeSantis also highlighted the ongoing debate between California and Florida, stating that people have been voting with their feet by leaving California in record numbers and moving to Florida. He emphasized Florida's strong economy, education system, and low crime rate as evidence of the state's success.
DeSantis also framed the debate as a crucial one for the future of the country, suggesting that figures like Joe Biden, Gavin Newsom, and Kamala Harris represent a path towards "the Californication of the United States." He argued that such a direction would accelerate American decline and called for a reversal of this trend.

Newsom had previously expressed his willingness to engage in a political debate with DeSantis during an interview with Hannity in June. When asked if he would participate in a two-hour debate with DeSantis, Newsom responded, "Make it three. I would do it one day's notice with no notes. I look forward to that."

DeSantis has also called on Newsom to stop considering a possible presidential run against President Joe Biden in the 2024 primary. During a press conference on June 15, DeSantis urged Newsom to "stop pussyfooting around" and more recently stated that he is "fully prepared" to run against Newsom if they were to become their parties' nominees.
