Echoing Musk's concerns, Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has previously identified the national debt as the "greatest threat" to the nation's security. He warned, "we are threatening the very existence of our currency, and perhaps our country, by this crazy profligate spending."

In a joint opinion piece published on The Hill, Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, GOP Representative Bill Huizenga of Michigan, and Democratic Representative Scott Peters of California collectively stated, "The national debt is the greatest threat our country faces — and we are rapidly approaching the crisis point. It is time for Congress to put the interests of the country ahead of political expediency and get us on sound fiscal footing before it is too late."
Similarly, Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming has also voiced her belief that "our debt is the greatest threat our country faces today."
