Can Trump Get Tough With China?

President-elect Donald J. Trump stunned world leaders when he spoke with the president of Taiwan earlier this month, breaking a protocol that existed since the United States and China established diplomatic relations in 1979. Under that policy, it was accepted that there was “One China” and that Taiwan’s independence could not be recognized. Trump later raised the possibility that the One China policy could be used as a bargaining chip in negotiating other issues, and complained that the United States did too much to accommodate China.

Can the United States get tougher with China and even undermine the One China policy?
