What The Last Jedi’s Porgs Actually Are, According To Rian Johnson

Written by

Following in the footsteps of Star Wars: The Force Awakens introducing BB-8, The Last Jedi will have its own dose of cuteness to add to the ball droid's return. That will come through the Porgs, a species native to Ahch-To, the planet where Luke Skywalker will train Rey.

The Porgs were immediately a hit to Star Wars fans upon being identified by Lucasfilm back in July, and now director Rian Johnson has provided new details on what these creatures exactly are. When asked by a fan for some late night Porg facts, Johnson answered:

They are sea birds. Their coloring varies. Males are slightly larger than females. They can fly short distances. They're inquisitive.

Rian Johnson dropping this extra Porg knowledge on Twitter should come as a delight to Star Wars fans who have fallen in love with the adorable creatures since they were first shown in The Last Jedi behind-the-scenes video screened at D23. Such tidbits would surely make good content for a Star Wars nature documentary or an alien guide for those traveling around that galaxy far, far away who want to learn about each planet's native species. Other Porg facts that Johnson previously revealed include that they're considered the Star Wars versions of puffins, they can be found on Ahch-To's cliffs, they're naturally curious and their babies are called porglets.
