'Atypical' Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Netflix has made a quick decision on the future of Atypical.

The streaming giant has renewed the autism comedy for a second season. The order is for an expanded 10-episode run, up two from its freshman pickup.

Written, created and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace), Atypical is a coming of age story from the point-of-view of Sam (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum searching for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives while exploring the question: what does it really mean to be “normal”?

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport play Gilchrist's parents; Brigette Lundy-Paine and Amy Okuda round out the cast. Seth Gordon exec produces the Sony Pictures Television Studios-produced comedy via his studio-based production company. Leigh also is credited as a producer.

Michelle Dean — who received her doctorate from UCLA and worked at the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment before joining the faculty of CSU Channel Island — was brought into the production to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder.
