In what seems to be more of a PR stunt to evoke emotion in Americans, the Defense Department released a photo of what it said was the "last American soldier to leave Afghanistan" as U.S. forces departed from the country ahead of President Joe Biden's Tuesday deadline.

The picture, which seems to have been taken through a night vision scope, shows Maj. Gen. Chris Donahue , commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps, boarding a C-17 cargo plane at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. The image was released under hails of 'historic' and 'emotional' imagery - some speculated it would win an award. Others, seem to think it was a stunt meant to help Biden retake some support from nationalists who truly love America and support the troops - a tone deaf picture as it celebrates something we should all be mourning.

"In awe of our Sky Dragon Soldiers. This was an incredibly tough, pressurized mission filled with multiple complexities, with active threats the entire time. Our troops displayed grit, discipline and empathy," the XVIII Airborne Corps said in a tweet .

After being pulled out of the country, ahead of an Aug. 31 deadline set by President Joe Biden, thousands of U.S. soldiers were delivered into Afghanistan this month to help with removals of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies as the U.S.-backed Afghan government fell and the Taliban took over.

He also said less than "200, likely closer to 100" U.S. citizens who want to leave the country remain in Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal, and the administration will try to help them get out of the country.

One person expressed his rage over Twitter, writing: "The commander-in-chief has approved leaving behind his own citizens that pay his salary - shocking. I would have thought the first item on the job description was to protect your own people. Shame @POTUS".

Another went in a different direction, saying: "Hope soldiers realize how many lives they save, that they've given freedom to those who never experienced it, how proud we are of them for their service. They followed the commander in chief (no matter which president ), bravely put their lives on the line. It's time to take care of them!"
