Former defense secretary on Trump feud with intel agencies

Written by  CBS News

Donald Trump exacerbated his feud with the intelligence community on Wednesday, first likening them to Nazis in a tweet, then doubling down in his press conference.

Trump seemingly blamed U.S. intelligence for the leak of a dossier filled with unsubstantiated, salacious rumors about him, purportedly compiled by Russian security services.

The president-elect had previously criticized intelligence agencies for laying the blame for the Democratic National Committee hacks on the Russians.

Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta spoke with Scott Pelley about the feud, saying that America’s national security is at stake.

“The first duty of the president is to protect our country and he cannot protect our country without the ability to get good intelligence on what our adversaries are up to,” Panetta said.

“That demands a relationship of trust and unfortunately I think I see a relationship in which that trust doesn’t exist right now.”

Watch the video above for more of Pelley’s interview with Panetta.
