Retaliation? At Least One Killed as Crowd Leaving London Mosque Hit by Van

Written by  Mark Tapson

Fox News reports that a large white van carrying at least three men appeared to veer intentionally into a crowd leaving a London mosque early today, leaving behind at least one killed and 10 injured.

Two of the occupants reportedly fled and the third, a 48-year-old Caucasian man who was driving the vehicle, has been arrested and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Authorities are referring to it as a potential terrorist attack

Muslims were leaving the Muslim Welfare House shortly after midnight after Ramadan prayers when the van struck them. Police said eight injured were taken to local hospitals and two more who suffered minor injuries were treated at the scene.

A leader of the Muslim Council of Britain called for extra security at mosques. The group's general secretary, Harun Khan, described the incident as a hate crime against Muslims. "During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship," he said. "It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia."

Khan didn't explain how witnesses could determine that "Islamophobia" was the driver's motivation. Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation said that eyewitnesses called it a "deliberate attack against innocent Muslims," but again, it's unclear how they know that.
