Father’s Day in Chicago: 300th Homicide Recorded

Written by  Trey Sanchez

The strict gun laws in Chicago continue to prove ineffective as the Windy City records another deadly weekend in the books. Just like last year, Father’s Day weekend 2017 ushered in the city’s 300th homicide.

Eleven people were killed over the weekend and at least 50 others wounded by gunfire. Those dead included an elderly couple who were stabbed to death and a 3-year-old girl who died from an assault on Sunday, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Overnight Sunday into Monday morning, the 300th homicide was recorded after a 33-year-old man died from a gunshot wound. Four people were killed and 13 were wounded in just five hours.

The only difference between Father’s Day this year and last? The 300th homicide happened a day later. And last year, 13 people were killed and 46 were wounded. In 2015, Chicago didn't reach 300 dead until August. For both 2014 and 2013, it took until September.

There is a silver lining, if you can call it that, according to The Tribune, as gun violence has scaled back, though very slightly, since last year:

Homicides are down slightly, by about six, from this time last year, according to Tribune data.
