Trump can’t shake Don Jr. scandal in Paris with Macron

Written by  Bob Fredericks

President Trump staunchly defended his eldest son in Paris on Thursday over his sit down with a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Hillary Clinton during the presidential race, insisting that most people in his position would have done the same thing.

Speaking during a joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump called Donald Trump Jr. “a wonderful young man” who was just hoping to get “opposition research” that was being offered.

“He took a meeting with a Russian lawyer. Not a government lawyer, but a Russian lawyer. It was a short meeting. It was a meeting that went very, very quickly. Very fast,” he said.

“Most people would have taken that meeting. It’s called opposition research, or even research into your opponent.”

The president said “many people” have called him with negative information dirt on his political opponents — including Clinton.

“I’ve had many people call up, ‘Oh, gee, we have information on this factor or this person,’ or frankly, Hillary. That’s very standard in politics. Politics is not the nicest business in the world, but it’s very standard, where they have information and you take the information.”

He then said that “zero” happened during the meeting and slammed the media.

“I think the press made a very big deal over something that really a lot of people would do,” he said.

Trump ducked a question about a comment from Christopher Wray, his nominee to be FBI director, who told a Senate Committee Wednesday that anyone who had been approached by a foreign national about meddling in a domestic political campaign should have contacted the FBI.

And he took a shot at ex-Attorney General Loretta Lynch for allowing the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, to enter the US without a visa in 2015 to represent a defendant in a tax fraud trial.

“Somebody said that her visa or her passport to come into the country was approved by Attorney General Lynch. I was a little surprised to hear that,” he said.

At the time, Veselnitskaya was representing a Russian businessman, Denis Katsyv, who was being investigated by the Justice Department for alleged money laundering.

The US charged Katsyv’s company Prevezon Holdings as part of a $230 million tax fraud case, which was settled for $6 million in May by Trump’s Justice Department.

Trump and Macron said they also talked about terrorism, trade, the Paris Climate Accords and other subjects during what both described as a friendly meeting.

Reta Talbert remember it is always better to be a smart ass than a dumb ass.

Don Jr. was told that he was meeting with a government attorney, according to the email chain he released.
Trump Sr doesn't seem to get the difference between parties doing "opposition research" and getting information from a foreign government. Americans vote for President.....why not Russians: what's the difference?
