President Trump continued to defend his son’s meeting with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have dirt on Hillary Clinton, tweeting on Monday that it was just “politics.”
“Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent. That’s politics!,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Donald Trump Jr. admitted having a sit-down with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin in June 2016, a meeting that also included former campaign manager Paul Manafort and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Later reports revealed that lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, who was once a Soviet counter-intelligence officer, also attended the Trump Tower gathering.
Trump Jr. said he agreed to meet Veselnitskaya because she promised to have information that was damaging to Democratic presidential candidate Clinton.
The president on Sunday said his eldest son was being set up by the Fake News Media.
“Hillary Clinton can illegally get the questions to the Debate & delete 33,000 emails but my son Don is being scorned by the Fake News Media?,” he wrote on Twitter.
The White House continues to deny he colluded with Moscow to interfere with the 2016 election.
A number of congressional panels, as well as the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller, are investigating Russian involvement in the election and any links to the Trump campaign.
