Senator threatened with note to oppose GOP’s health care bill

WASHINGTON – Police are investigating a threatening note left over the weekend at the district office of Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, a potential swing vote in the effort to repeal Obamacare, it was reported Monday.

Law enforcement authorities responded on Saturday to a burglary alarm at a building in southwest Las Vegas where the Republican’s local office is located.

There they found a “threatening note” urging Heller to oppose the Senate GOP healthcare bill.

The author of the note told Heller they would both lose their lives if the senator votes in favor of the legislation and it passes, the Nevada Independent reported.

“The preliminary investigation by patrol officers determined that a burglary did not occur to the main building or to Senator Heller’s office. However, a threatening note addressed to Senator Heller was discovered near the door to his office,” local police said in a statement, noting that their investigation of the incident is ongoing.

Heller is one of several GOP senators who has been critical of the Republican-led effort to repeal Obamacare and significantly scale back federal spending on Medicaid.

Though he has yet to publicly oppose a revised version of the bill, the senator strongly condemned an original draft, claiming at the time “there isn’t anything in this bill that would lower premiums.”

A “no” vote by Heller or one other GOP senator would doom the bill in the upper chamber now that two Republicans – Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Susan Collins (Maine) – have already opposed it.

Senate Republicans are expected to face a vote to advance the bill to the floor next week, once Sen. John McCain of Arizona has returned to Washington after recovering from eye surgery.
