New York State Approves Tuition-Free Public College

Written by  Mike LaChance

Read the fine print.

Shouldn’t this be called taxpayer funded college tuition? It’s not going to be free for them.

Inside Higher Ed reports:

New York Approves Free Tuition Regulations

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation Board of Trustees approved regulations for the state’s new tuition-free public college tuition program Thursday, including some key regulations that would seem to address concerns about residency and credit-completion requirements.

Several provisions address a requirement that students complete 30 credits in a year in order to remain eligible for the program or risk having to pay their tuition back. One of the new provisions would allow students to count college credits earned in high school toward the 30-credit requirement. Another would apply to students who enrolled in the last two years but fell six or fewer credits short of the 30-credit-per-year requirement. It would allow them the chance to catch up on credits and be eligible for 2018-19 academic year and afterward.

Other provisions apply to requirements that students live and work in New York State for the same number of years they received program grants or have their grants turned into loans. One allows for the residency obligation to be waived for military service requirements.

The taxes in NY are going to skyrocket!! Especially after they lose all of that federal money for being a sanctuary city!! They will eventually become a ghost state!! The people in upstate NY will move out instead of having their taxes shoot them into bankruptcy just so the libturd snowflakes don't have to be responsible for their own college tuition!! The rest of us have been doing it for decades!!!

If you hear a sawing sound, it is Upstate NY striving to free themselves of NYC. This wasn't NY voting for this... it was NYC. Taxes will rise to support this scenario (and probably some bloated University Professor salaries). As taxes rise, those being taxed to ruin will flee... which will result in higher taxes.. and more taxpayers will flee. NY has pulled off a California!!! (But with much lousier weather.) Flee while you can!!! The snowflakes are coming!!!

More freebies for the leeches who vote for the Communists - er, I mean the Democrats - and more taxes for those people who work. Doesn't it just make you want to move to NY right now?

New York wants to be broke like California? The state leaders wants open borders for millions of new state dependent in need relief families, no illegals deported just give the entitlements to encourage more to come, tax the crap out of property owners so rents can skyrocket along with prices. Free college, like health care the rich will not be charged, but the middle class even if dying out or ripe to be taken for paying someone else's tuition. All this will benefit us all say the left? Just like the 12 trillion Obama added to the national debt placing the nation near bankruptcy will help our children and grandchildren that have to pay it back? Eight years of Obama and the nation went absolutely insane with stupidity. Why not ask the motions that bring us fake news daily their worthless opinions?

If New York give free college programs and the taxes go up more than they are now,New York will become another Chicago where it will not be worst the time to put a business or for anyone to live there, There land will lose it's value so it'll be better to move on.

Yeah, sure, as you lower all those taxes in order to get all those companies that left your leftist state to come back in & set up shop, right? Gosh, it seems like a race to the wire between California & New York State to see which one of these leftist cesspools will go belly up first.

In one or two academic years the degree awarded by these institutions of learning will be approximately equal to what the grad paid for it.

This is great until those idiots find out that they MUST remain in New York, find jobs there and pay exorbitant taxes to make up for the "free" education. Idiots always fall for these schemes not realizing they just got conned by their government. How about working their way through college? It has works for 200 years, why wouldn't it work now?

They figure that they can "scam/con" the state of New York when it comes to living up to ALL of the requirements. Thinking things thru isn't high on their "to do" list.

Real toss up as to which state California or New York is the dumbest. you can.onlyattribute that accessment to it's citizens..who are so in love with the socialist lifestyle. These two states want their citizens beholden to government. Just another backdoor entry for control over them by the dems. Just like the sickening law ObamaCare..

Hey Shirley, maybe this will balance out the stupidity for you.....LOL Both are dumb..... Residents in both states will ultimately pay for it.....http://www.libertyheadlines.com/california-pushes-forward-400-billion-universal-health-care-bill/

What they are proposing is PAID DISRUPTERS to ruin the education prospects of actual students, while paid ACTIVISTS destroy grades 13 and 14, just as progressives have destroyed grades k-12..
And the people of NY had better wise up.

This is how the Progressive Socialist Democrats work. Then they control the curriculum and the minds of the sucker students. When you think of Communists, think first of Progressive Socialists because that is where they progress to. .Think Hillary Clinton, a self-proclaimed Progressive Socialist.

I was under the impression New York is broke? Is this another idea that is going to cause more people to leave New York. I heard that people are bailing out of New York, could be the city, what's the difference. The over the head taxes will just get a little higher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must be the demo-craps in charge!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interestingly, I think this move will make the degrees earned worth exactly nothing. Which is what students pay, however, taxpayers in NY and NYC will see increases that could ruin many. As to bringing in people, the residency requirement will make them wait, likely a year, and still have to get behind long time residents. Part of the plan is that these freebees require students to have local jobs. Yeah, that is going to be easy when thousands want free higher education. Good luck NY, your surname is now California.

were do you thing is going too pay for free college ( TAXPAYER) will pick up the bill as always

I plan to have a dual major in African-American Feminist Studies and Antifa Perspectives on Climate Change with a minor in Post-Modernist Philosophy of Socio-Economic Gobbledygook. Thank you, working people.

If anyone believes that it is free, they need to have their head checked. Somebody has to pay. Guess who, the taxpayers.

They are no longer "citadels of higher learning" but indoctrination camps for the Left. It has been a plot for social revolution/take over since the 1960's. Hell, I grew up and dealt with it then (High School class of 1973 and a Vietnam-era Veteran US Navy). You can't fool a man with a GOOD college education. I obtained mine later in life after gaining a moral compass. I knew when the Professor was a Social Justice Warrior and full of the Socialist crap.
