Trump’s Plan For Education Has Teachers Unions FREAKING OUT

Written by  Robert Gehl

Donald Trump is thinking about blowing up America’s educational system as we know it.

Getting our kids’ education out of the hands of unaccountable Washington bureaucrats and self-serving teachers unions, the President is considering a national tax credit scholarship that would provide working-class families with money they need so their children can attend the private, religious or charger school of their choice.

This would be a first-of-its-kind program that could funnel billions of dollars to families so they wouldn’t be locked into a public school that might be failing.

It’s one of several tax credit proposals under review by the White House to fulfill President Trump’s campaign promise to promote the expansion of charger schools and vouchers, Politico is reporting.

During a recent meeting with parents and teachers at the White House, Trump said he wants “every single disadvantaged child in America, no matter what their background or where they live, to have a choice about where they go to school.”

But there are critics on both sides of the political spectrum. Public school advocates say these tax credits are merely a voucher in disguise and would take tax dollars from struggling public schools.

“The end result is the same — federal tax dollars going to private schools,” said Sasha Pudelski, assistant director for policy and advocacy at AASA, The School Superintendents Association, who called the program “a backdoor voucher.

Teacher unions are a concoction of the left that has been holding children back for decades. Parental choice for their childrens schools is definitely the way to go. My siblings and I attended public schools until my parents realized we weren't learning or achieving as we should. Private parochial school solved the problem quickly. Private high-school also, which I graduated as valedictorian, and lastly a BA in criminal justice. None of this would have happened with a public school education. Thanks mom and dad.

As a taxpayer, I would have to object to any idea that increases government spending. We are not in a position
to come up with new programs, that increase spending, Just take away common core as it is not teaching any
thing to children that they need to enter the population as a working individual.
They will not even be able to grocery shop with the math that is currently being taught.
I think parents should choose what they can afford, and if it is public school they should visit , check the children's
homework and be aware of what is being taught, and wrong things, like wearing hijabs, learning all about Islam, etc
should be done away with. That does not cost us anything. Just clear up the things that are wrong.

Um...er...ah they don't need to increase taxes to allow children to attend the school of their choice! My child goes to a private school in California and they accept the state/district tax collection expense per child as payment in full. I pay nothing out of pocket and my child gets a good education. No taxes were raised or introduced for this program. Many states are not like this, that is they will not pay out to anything other than a state sponsored public school. My last son started High School with a very unimpressive D's and C's, and an incomplete on his first quarter grades and then we transferred to a private school (where he was treated respectfully, was challenged, and allowed to go at a faster pace) and his semester final grades were 3 A's and one B+!

First, I served on a school board in an exurban school district and I attended many state conferences for school board members and a national school board conference. I could write a book, but I’m too old and tired.

A few of points:
In 1983 A Nation at Risk was published. It concluded, “If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves. We have even squandered the gains in student achievement made in the wake of the Sputnik challenge. Moreover, we have dismantled essential support systems which helped make those gains possible. We have, in effect, been committing an act of unthinking, unilateral educational disarmament.”

Duckworth & Seligman, 2005 indicates that self discipline is twice the indicator of scholastic success as IQ. The successful alternative schools are all schools where discipline is maintained.

In a discussion with the Assistant Superintendent of curriculum who was stressing parental involvement I asked, “What do you do for the children whose parents either can’t or won’t get involved? Toss them in the garbage.” I suggest that you create a positive, disciplined cultural environment at school to counter the lack at home.

Every chance I get I ask educators if they ever heard of a study called Operating Follow Through. Not one educator ever replied in the affirmative. Operation Follow Through was the largest education research project ever undertaken and lasted over ten years yet it is never discussed in any Teachers College courses. The results have been largely ignored. Google “Douglas Carnine Follow Through”.

Then there is the1995 TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study). The US came out in the bottom third despite spending more on education than all but one country.

There’s more. I haven’t even touched the failure of reading instruction, but I need to take a nap.

Thank you. I was fortunate to graduate in 1963 from a small independent school district. We had great teachers and a good core curriculum. We did not have art classes, pottery, basket weaving... We did have Home Ec. and Shop and Ag, mechanical drawing. We had good discipline. Other schools in the consolidated district nearby had problems with stabbings and fights. We were the country bumpkin school. Our parents were blue collar or agriculture (farmers and ranchers)..

Then after I graduated, the school board made the decision to consolidate with the big district nearby. They wanted to build a new high school and the budget would not allow that. We consolidated. We lost our football stadium, the new instrument truck that the band boosters bought for our band and lots of other things. Our team had to go clear across town to play football and the junior high schools got our new stadium. We had to share with the BIG high school and the local college. The band had to make do with the old truck. We had our lines redrawn and we had a lot of new people in the schools, we also had knife fights and fist fights.

As a high school math teacher I stopped working in public schools years ago in favor of private, charter, and homeschool programs. Students are not the property of the state. Parents should decide what is best for their children. Teenagers and parents should explore options that best serve them. Outside of public school I am not asked to lie or pass failing students. I am not penalized if I say something is right or something is wrong and ethics are valued, not ridiculed.

It's scary how many "rubber rooms" are in the New York City school system because they can't fire useless teachers so they pay them to sit around all day and do nothing. This is sinful. My father-in-law was a teacher, principal and then superintendent. He said God help our schools if the unions every get hold of them. He didn't live to see the muck that the teacher's unions have caused to our schools, but I'm sure he's rolling over in his grave on a daily basis.

... but who will teach the kids about transgender sex choice, victimization-thinking, entitlement, self-esteem and global climate change?

We don't need this kind of oppressive and demeaning education. Kids should not be TAUGHT about transgender sex choice-this is a means to destroy the country and our culture from within. The bogus LGBT agenda is so radical and anti-cultural, focusing on the socialist agenda f destruction of the family unit. The quickest way to destroy the culture of a country is to destroy the family. This is happening so rapidly, it is amazing.

Education in America has been a complete waste of taxpayer money. We have gone from near the top to next to last out of 35 countries in the index. The Washington education socialists have worked hard to dumb down the curriculum to where we have empty-headed liberals who cannot see the larger picture or be able to think critically. Everything from the left is totally emotional, no facts, no reality, no relation to cause and effect, and inability to think for themselves. Critical thinking was dropped from the college experience in the 80's.

Entitlement? No one is entitled to anything. If you have any truth about you, you earn respect. Everyone of us suffers setbacks, we work hard to overcome them and are better for it. If you wait to others to recognize that you, or sometime in history, more than a hundred years ago your relative was in a position not of their making, and you feel you are entitled to something because of their suffering, then you are a very selfish, non-contribution member of today’s society – a leech on the people who do try to make society better.

Climate change? Simply a distorted means of transferring wealth from today’s rich to those who want to become rich. God made this planet to be self-sustaining. If you really study the history of climate, there is constant flux. From warming to freezing. I’m tired of this hogwash. More lies of the progressive/socialist liberals.

If families, which were the first form of government and education, returned to their role of teaching, disciplining, and setting life expectations, we would not be in the quagmire we are in today. Again, the goes back to the socialist/progressive teachers and professors who have filled student’s heads with distorted truth and hatred. They have contributed to the demise of Christian beliefs because they were antithetical to their socialist agenda. Socialism is the teaching of lemmings who will eventually run off of the cliff to their death. If you don't believe me, look at how far the left has taken this country in moral values. Look at how the weak-minded liberals are reacting to the fact Clinton lost the presidential race. Is their any logic behind their venom? Or is it just because ...? I believe it is just because they didn't get what they wanted--more destructive leadership. Do they have cogent arguments? No, just unfounded emotional response.

Grow up! Contribute! Don't whine and try to destroy our culture. Go somewhere else and sell this craziness you are trying to peddle. We don't want any part of it!
DANG! Chuck, I was being ironic - look it up

Just when the Bolsheviks think they have a lock on dumbing down and indoctrinating the youth..this happens. Americans spend 3 times as much on Public Ed then in the 50's with pathetic results...The Unions and Dept of Ed. are 100% to blame. Here on the Left coast..California use to be number 1 , now we're 48th in Public Ed. but we do rank first in transgender bathrooms and safe places.

The social progressives of been in control of our schools since the 60s. They have changed their schools from being places of education to becoming places of indoctrination. They've destroy the very social network and morality of America's young people.
Unfortunately the moral standards that we hold our school teachers to no longer exists this is quite evident in the number of teachers that are being prosecuted for statutory rape and other assorted moral crimes.
Where the United States used to come in first in the world with the quality of our education were now somewhere down towards the bottom of industrialized nations.
The first reforms that need to be done in our school systems is to reward the good teachers and remove those it would be better suited to cleaning toilets.

Every teacher should be required every two years to taking written tests to evaluate their own knowledge of the subject they're supposed to be teaching. There's no excuse for any teacher who cannot pass a written test required for high school seniors and that they do not pass the test with the least a 90% they will have three months in which to prepare to take the test again and if they still do not reach 90% their teaching credentials will be pulled and they will be removed from the educational system.

The administrative staff of our schools also need to be evaluated and their confidence verified. Part of their responsibility will be the restoration of discipline into the school system working with the government to solve the disciplinary problems that they now face.

Students will be evaluated the middle and the end of the school years in K-6 and students in 7-12 will be evaluated three times during the school year. Every student will be required to graduate with a high school diploma exceptions can be made for the handicapped.

Upon graduation from high school every student will get not only a diploma but will also receive their voter registration card and a draft card. At graduation every student will be required for for basic training within three months of graduation. Basic training will be set for a minimum of 60 days. After the completion of basic training they will be required to serve one year of active duty not necessarily in the military but in a governmental support facility.

After completion of one year governmental service will be given the choice of whether to remain on active duty for three years or four years of active reserve for they will be required to spend a minimum of three weeks of active duty per year.

Without the high school diploma the individuals will not be eligible for any governmental programs or any governmental assistance and they will not be eligible to vote.
Without completing basic training and serving the necessary minimal active service they will not be allowed to vote but because they did finish high school with a diploma they will be eligible for governmental grants and assistance.

Failure to complete the educational program will lead to incarceration in an institution that will assist in their finishing their high school studies and receiving their diploma. They will remain in that institution until the educational requirements are completed.

Just an idea anyway. They could also be used for the immigration problem also. Immigrants can become citizens by completing a course of study to the equivalent of a high school diploma, English proficiency requirement and by serving six years in the active military.

Bob,

Too much. Your one size does not fit all. Eliminate us dept of education. All education should go to ststes then to counties. Local education best. Feds should fund no schools or colleges
(Updated: February 23, 2017)

Its high time that failing schools meet the natural consequence of their inability and/or refusal to function adequately.
Its no secret what it takes to teach children the three Rs and an appreciation for humanities. We certainly DO NOT need Xoctorates in "Education" to tell us nor unions and politicians.
The free market will.provide basic skills and education to those sufficiently motivated and direct thoae who are not to vocations.
The world economy will no longer support lifetime "jobs" that require no reeducation. Now is the time for America to lead the way to lifetime periodic retraininig that professionals have historically undergone.
Its obvious that a society that relies on immigrants for moderately educated workforce. needs to rebuild its own fundamental educational system. Higher ed will follow such reformation, and all those silly modern "culure studies" courses will die the death that they deserve.

Shall we refer to the Liberals as Neanderthals, who have been doing what is right IN THEIR OWN EYES They have a problem with teaching intelligent design even if it is more accurate and clearly more scientific than evolution which fails to explain the complexity of the living cell and how it became so complex. Especially when you realize the world works in entropy and does not become more complex.

Private Charter schools, or private schools as well as religious ones all cost a lot. My daughter taught at two different types for 3-4 years and said it was a nightmare. This is not the way to go but getting rid of incompetent teachers would be a good start. That applies to the hierarchy also.
The parents are also part of the learning problem. They do not get involved nor help especially in the low income areas and at all ages or grades. There will be issues where ever kids go. It's also like AA, you have to want to learn inorder TOP LEARN. Though that too is a problem & on the teachers shoulders who can relate to the kids so they understand.
But public schools trump the others, over all imo.

Not true. It would enable middle class families the ability to keep their kids in private/religious and charter schools. These families pay taxes just like you do.

If it causes the collective head of the "Teacher's Union" to explode, you just know that it has to be a good thing.

White bigot Americans will soon have their segregated schools again. Religious schools will soon get financial support to indoctrinate the students of their religious dogma. Low-income Blacks and Whites will suffer because they would not be able to afford the extra costs of sending their children to the RELIGIOUS, Charter and other private schools. The teacher unions need to take off their dark glasses and stop drinking that old Koolaid and be a part of the solution to make the public school better and NOT
support incompetent teachers.

Here is an awesome post for you to read

I have a few public school teachers in my family. They never talk about how they try to educate children. All I ever hear them talk about is their lucrative benefits, health insurance, pensions, summers off, and many other benefits. Short of murder and child molestation they cannot be fired. Even if they do commit murder or have sex with students due process can take years while still receiving a TAXPAYER funded check.

Public schools fail our inner city children. They deserve better

I don't ever want my kids going to a religious school--they don't want kids to learn to think, but just lap up and repeat what they have been told. A good public school exposes children to a variety of ideas. Of course, that is precisely what the GOP and the religious right are afraid of, and what will kill democracy in the US faster than anything. And children in public schools are exposed to children coming from a variety of cultures--that teaches them understanding and tolerance, something else the closed-minded conservatives are afraid of.

The Liberals are scared they won't be able to indoctrinate our kids any longer. It would be nice to have a choice of teachers as we do in colleges. I dropped every Liberal teacher in college because of the bias against Conservative students. Conservative teachers were more difficult but I learned more and they were fair.

Okay Melda Page, just look at the disaster the schools have got into in the past 100 years. School are being run by the wrong people. It is time to give states and school districts a chance to do better than funneling the money into the unions.

Well, that is your choice... My son was in Public school through the second grade. I put him in Catholic school because the public school wasn't teaching him anything. His teacher was a complete softie that let the children override her.... My son was 6 months behind when he went to third grade at Catholic school. By the time he was out of third grade he had advanced more than a years worth of education. When he finally went back to public school in the ninth grade, He was already ahead of their teaching schedule. Counselor said he had a better education than most. So, if you want your children to become complete idiots continue to send them to public school. They won't have to learn about religion, but will learn they can be LGBTQ wherever and whenever they want..

whoever wrote this piece should know that it is not "charger" schools!, its "charter" schools!
