Gun was given back to Florida shooting suspect last month

Written by  Reuters

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. An Iraq war veteran took a gun out of his checked luggage and opened fire in a crowded baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale's airport on Friday, killing five people, months after he showed up at an FBI office behaving erratically.

Esteban Santiago, 26, who was taken into custody immediately following the shooting and questioned at length, was expected to face federal charges in the shooting rampage, said George Piro, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's office in Miami.

Piro said investigators had not ruled out terrorism as a possible motive in the rampage and were reviewing the suspect's recent travel.

Santiago, who had served in the U.S. military, had arrived in Ft. Lauderdale shortly before 1 p.m. local time (1800 GMT) on a connecting flight from Alaska, authorities said, when he retrieved a 9mm semi-automatic handgun from his checked luggage and began firing indiscriminately.

Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca said on Twitter that the gunman went into a restroom to load his weapon and came out firing. Witnesses told MSNBC television he only stopped after running out of ammunition, at which point he surrendered to police.

Cellphone video posted on social media showed travelers kneeling and treating victims on the floor next to a carousel.

Who was the idiot who gave him back his gun. Gross incompetence. If he was a Trump supporter they would have kept it.

The FBI didn't have the time nor the manpower to properly watch this person, besides he was only a potential mass murderer!
The FBI had all their resources busy colluding with Obama in his quest to try and disqualify Donald Trump before he can get sworn into the office of POTUS!
We the people have spoken and we the people very well may have to speak again but with a different kind of voice!

The procedures for traveling with a firearm are well established. That said, I thought the weapon had to be unloaded and the ammunition not shipped with it. So where did he get the ammo? Was is missed by the TSA in Anchorage? Did he have it on his person or in his luggage? Or was it somehow supplied to him at Ft. Lauderdale? Somebody screwed up somewhere.

If the FBI had gotten their head out of their ass, this would not have happend, this man asked for help prior to, and received nothing from them. Now 5 people are dead and 9 wounded. Way to go FBI.

To Godfrey below- i don't think anybody can prove that all these additional agencies were totally necessary let alone have prevented something that police, detectives, or the FBI could have taken care of. Once you lose a gun which was probably for a very good reason you should not get it back. Also, once on a watch list you should actually be WATCHED forever.

Matlonc, that was the point of my post. We over react to anything in this country and is another reason why everything is so expensive. Thanks for the reply and have a great day.

What's the batting average for people who had their weapons taken away and then given back and killing innocent people? And what is the batting average for people who were put on watch lists, then taken off and then they kill innocent people?
Were there more innocent people killed before Homeland Security was formed, or have there been more since it has been formed? The numbers just don't work out. If one looks at most of the people who were on the radar before they killed others in these rampages it appears that almost each one looks sort of crazy to begin with. My last question, Has Homeland Security actually prevented any killings? It appears our government manages to close the gate just after the killers get out the fence. Is there a pattern here?

Yes it's called Incompetence. Is it any wonder why American Citizens do not trust The FBI, The Cia etc. They have become so political that they can't do the job we hired them to do. We need to stop the P. C. BS. Let these people do the Job that our TAX Dollars are paying them to do.

OOPS! SOMEONE MADE A MISTAKE IN GIVING HIM BACK HIS GUN!
