WATCH: Trans-Student Challenges Glenn Youngkin On VA's Sports And Bathroom Policies

During CNN’s town hall on Thursday, Nico, a 17-year-old transgender student, questioned Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin about state legislation regarding sports and school bathrooms.

According to Fox News, the student said, “Look at me. I am a transgender man. Do you think the girls in my high school would feel comfortable sharing a restroom with me?”.

The Republican governor defended the policies his administration rewrote, which require students to use the appropriate bathrooms and locker rooms and participate on sports teams based on their gender at birth. Students are also required not to change their names and pronouns without parental consent.

The governor thanked the students for their attendance. He then discussed his support of the policies, saying, “I believe first that when parents are engaged with their children, then you can make good decisions together, and I met your dad, and I’m glad that you’re both here together – it’s important.”

Mentioning how many students were involved in the decision, he stressed the importance of accommodating students and stressed the need for more school bathrooms, including gender-neutral restrooms. In that way, all students could feel comfortable in their own spaces.

Youngkin added that people could use the restroom they were most comfortable using. About sports competitions, the governor addressed the issue of transgenders competing in men’s and women’s sports. He said, “I think sports are very clear, and I don’t think it’s controversial. I don’t think biological boys should be playing sports with biological girls. There have been decades of efforts to gain opportunities for women in sports. And it’s just not fair. And I think that’s non-controversial and pretty well understood.”

While not everyone would agree with Virginia’s policies, Youngkin has made a reasonable effort to provide safe spaces for student-athletes and the student population in bringing more fairness to the legislation of those policies.
