In a significant development for fast-food lovers, McDonald's has announced plans to introduce Krispy Kreme donuts across all its 13,500-plus locations in the United States by the end of 2026.

The rollout is set to commence in the second half of this year and is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete. This move signifies an exclusive partnership between McDonald's and Krispy Kreme in the U.S. for the duration of the agreement.

The fast-food giant revealed the news on Tuesday, although the duration of Krispy Kreme's presence in McDonald's outlets post-2026 remains unclear. Upon completion of the rollout, McDonald's customers will have the option to order original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles, and chocolate iced cream-filled donuts, either individually or in packs of six, confirmed a Krispy Kreme spokesperson to The Post. The donuts will be available for purchase throughout the day.

To mark this partnership, Krispy Kreme has announced a giveaway of free original glazed donuts to all guests visiting its U.S.-based bakeries between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 26.

To cater to the vast network of McDonald's outlets, Krispy Kreme will employ a "hub and spoke" model, similar to the one used to deliver its popular fried and glazed treats to the 6,800 third-party stores where its donuts are currently sold. Production hubs, which include Krispy Kreme stores or donut factories, will dispatch freshly made donuts daily to retail locations such as grocery stores and gas stations, as reported by CNBC.

Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth told CNBC, "We think we can service about 6,000 restaurants with our existing infrastructure, mostly doughnut shops, which have excess capacity." However, McDonald's, with an additional 7,500 restaurants, has disclosed plans to open 900 new locations across the U.S. by 2027.

While Krispy Kreme is increasing its production capacity primarily for the McDonald's partnership, Charlesworth highlighted that the deal presents a significant opportunity for the donut shop to expand its reach. The company also plans to use this opportunity to establish a presence in grocery and convenience stores that prefer national suppliers.

Charlesworth added, "That means that the overall efficiency and productivity of our distribution network will significantly improve over time, not just because of all those local deliveries." The partnership is also expected to result in less waste, as Krispy Kreme's locations often produce more treats than they can sell in a day. With increased demand from McDonald's and other new sellers, Krispy Kreme will be able to produce more donuts without incurring additional production costs.

A McDonald's spokesperson told The Post, "This partnership will unlock incremental growth opportunities for McDonald's restaurants across the country – particularly in the breakfast daypart (because who doesn't love a fresh doughnut with their McCafé in the morning?) but also throughout the day."

The relationship between Krispy Kreme and McDonald's began in late 2022 when the fast-food chain sold the brand's donuts at nine locations in Kentucky. Following the successful pilot, McDonald's expanded the offering to an additional 146 restaurants across the state and more than a dozen locations in Indiana. The demand from McDonald's customers during the tests exceeded both chains' expectations, Charlesworth said, according to CNBC.
