As reported by The New York Post, Vice President Kamala Harris, during a campaign event in Phoenix, Arizona, made a compelling case for the re-election of President Biden, emphasizing the crucial role it would play in safeguarding women's reproductive rights.

She urged the Arizonians to exercise their voting rights, stating that the re-election of the 81-year-old President would ensure the codification of abortion rights across the nation. This, she pointed out, was a stark departure from the stance of former President Donald Trump.

"Most Americans I've encountered in my travels concur that one's faith or deeply held beliefs need not be compromised to agree that the government shouldn't dictate what a woman does with her body," Harris told the audience. She added, "We trust women to discern what is in their best interest."

The campaign event coincided with the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's pivotal ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson, which reversed the Roe vs. Wade decision. Harris attributed the 2022 high-court decision to Trump, stating, "Former President Donald Trump hand-picked three members of the United States Supreme Court with the intention that they would dismantle the protections of Roe v. Wade, and they did as he intended."

Arizona, which implemented abortion restrictions following the Dobbs ruling, has a 15-week ban on the procedure, with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. The Vice President criticized this policy, stating, "The notion that the so-called leaders would tell a survivor of a violent crime against their body, a survivor of a violation of their body, that they have no right or authority to decide what happens to their body next, is immoral. That's what's happening in our country."

Earlier this year, Arizona was at the heart of the abortion debate when the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that an 1864 law banning nearly all abortions in the state could be enforced. After weeks of debate, Democrats and a few Republicans voted to advance a bill repealing the Civil War-era law, which was signed into law by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in May.

Abortion-rights activists are now pushing for a statewide ballot initiative in November that would enshrine the right to an abortion until "fetal viability" in Arizona's constitution. However, opponents argue that the ballot measure's language, which includes a broad "mental health" exemption, could allow for abortions well beyond the point of fetal viability.

Harris praised Arizona's efforts in the fight for freedom, stating, "Our work right now is absolutely directly going to affect the people of Arizona. That's what's in our hands right now." She urged everyone to register to vote, reminding them that the upcoming election would shape the country's trajectory for generations to come.

According to a recent CBS News poll, 51% of likely voters in Arizona considered abortion a "major factor" in deciding their presidential vote, significantly less than the 82% who prioritized the economy and the 61% who considered the US-Mexico border a major issue.

The Vice President's event was attended by several state lawmakers, but notable absences included Gov. Hobbs and Democratic state Attorney General Kris Mayes. Mayes' office informed The Post that she was attending a virtual court hearing and was unable to attend.

Following visits from First Lady Jill Biden and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland earlier this month, Harris's stop in Arizona comes at a critical time. Biden narrowly won the state in 2020, following Trump's 2016 victory. However, the presumptive GOP candidate for president currently holds a 5.6 point advantage in the state, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls.

Despite the challenges, Harris remained optimistic, declaring, "We are going to win! It won't be easy, but we are going to win!"
