The untimely demise of Matthew Perry, the beloved actor from the iconic sitcom "Friends," has taken a new turn as law enforcement sources reveal that the investigation into his death is nearing its conclusion.

The sources, who spoke to PEOPLE on Tuesday, suggested that "multiple people" could face charges in connection with Perry's death last October. The final decision on pressing charges rests with the US Attorney's Office, which refrained from commenting on the matter.

As reported by The New York Post, Perry was discovered lifeless at the age of 54 in his jacuzzi at his upscale Pacific Palisades residence in Los Angeles on October 28. Initial reports suggested drowning as the cause of death. However, a subsequent toxicology report confirmed that acute effects of ketamine led to his demise, which was ruled as accidental. Drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects were also listed as contributing factors.

In May, law enforcement sources revealed to TMZ that an investigation was underway to trace the source of the ketamine and identify the person who supplied the lethal drug to Perry. The investigation involves both local police and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Los Angeles Police Department had initiated an investigation into Perry's death last year, which was closed in January. Perry's autopsy report revealed a ketamine level of 3.54 micrograms per milliliter in his bloodstream at the time of his death, nearly three times the normal amount.

Dr. Philip Wolfson, a ketamine expert and author, told The Post in December that Perry had an excessive amount of ketamine in his system. "He really did himself in. He must have taken a large amount. You don't do this and go swimming or go into a pool of any sort," Wolfson cautioned.

In his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry candidly discussed his long-standing battle with addiction. He disclosed that he had received ketamine infusions at a Swiss rehab clinic during the pandemic. Perry described the drug as a "giant exhale," and admitted that he would often feel as if he were "dying" during his infusions.

Perry's autopsy revealed that he had his last ketamine treatment about a week and a half before his death. Perry's illustrious career included his memorable portrayal of Chandler Bing in all 10 seasons of "Friends" from 1994 to 2004.

His former co-stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt Le Blanc — along with his father John Bennett Perry, mother Suzanne Perry, stepfather Keith Morrison, sisters, and other loved ones, paid their respects at his funeral at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills in November.

The tragic loss of Perry underscores the dangers of drug misuse and the importance of robust law enforcement efforts to curb illegal drug trafficking. As the investigation into Perry's death progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of addiction on individuals and their loved ones.
