In a recent clash with former President Donald Trump, ex-Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney retorted sharply to Trump's accusations of treason.

Trump had shared an image on his Truth Social platform suggesting Cheney's guilt and calling for her trial in "televised military tribals."

Cheney, the former Wyoming representative, responded to Trump's allegations with a pointed message. "Donald – This is the type of thing that demonstrates yet again that you are not a stable adult," she wrote, "and are not fit for office." Cheney's rebuttal underscores the ongoing tension between the two political figures, a tension rooted in their differing views on the events of January 6, 2021.

According to The Independent, Cheney was one of the ten House Republicans who voted for Trump's impeachment following the Capitol attack. She served as a co-chair and was one of only two Republicans on the House Select Committee that investigated the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the attack. This committee was tasked with examining the riot incited by Trump's supporters in an attempt to halt the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

The image shared by Trump on Truth Social featured a picture of Cheney with the text, "Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason" and "Retruth if you want televised military tribunals." Trump's account reposted this image, marking another attempt by the former President to discredit the Select Committee's findings.

The committee's report concluded that Trump and his campaign supported a "multi-part conspiracy" to overturn his election loss. Despite this, Trump failed to prevent his supporters from storming Congress in a violent attempt to enforce this reversal. Trump has consistently criticized the committee's members and called for their criminal prosecution. His allies in the House of Republicans have also urged federal courts and the Supreme Court to dismiss the committee's findings.

Trump's latest attack on Cheney coincides with his former White House adviser Steve Bannon's imprisonment for defying subpoenas to provide evidence and testimony to the committee. Bannon, found in contempt of Congress, was sentenced to four months in prison. He is the second official from Trump's circle to be incarcerated for crimes related to the Capitol attack. Former adviser Peter Navarro also defied congressional subpoenas and is currently serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress.
