Google has moved to acquire a vast cache of Spirit Airlines’ internal data for $10 million, securing a powerful new fuel source for its artificial intelligence systems as the bankrupt carrier’s assets are carved up in court.

According to Breitbart, the deal—detailed in Bloomberg Law and Tom’s Hardware reports—comes after Spirit Airlines declared bankruptcy and halted operations in May, triggering a court-supervised selloff to address roughly $8.1 billion in debt. Multiple tech firms reportedly vied for access to the airline’s data trove, but Google emerged victorious in the bidding war.

Google’s $10 million offer topped Mercor.io’s $7.5 million bid, giving the Silicon Valley behemoth a decisive $2.5 million edge. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has designated Mercor.io Corp. as a backup purchaser if the Google transaction collapses.

The company has stated it will use the Spirit data to train its large language models, the same class of AI systems now reshaping media, politics, and the economy. Court filings show the purchase covers 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams chats, 7.2 billion records tracking competitors’ flights, and 7.5 billion passenger transaction records dating back to 2008.

The haul also includes more than 175,000 employee records stretching back to 1986, offering a granular look at decades of airline operations. Beyond those headline figures, Google will gain access to information on revenue, aircraft operations, employee productivity, audits and fraud investigations, marketing campaigns, human resources files, project management records, and pricing curve data.

Such a sweeping transfer of corporate and operational information raises obvious concerns for anyone who has dealt with Spirit as a customer, worker, contractor, or investor, especially amid mounting unease over AI and data privacy. Court documents, however, assert that Google will not receive personal data.

Specifically, the deal excludes the 97.5 million passenger profiles Spirit maintained and the 50.2 million customer records tied to its Free Spirit loyalty program. The court further declared that all data transferred to Google will be “rigorously scrubbed of any personally identifiable information by a third party before receipt.”

The acquisition underscores how AI giants, having already scraped much of the open internet, are now racing to secure unique, specialized datasets that competitors cannot easily replicate. Some of these efforts have already drawn scrutiny, including reports of mass acquisition of books and other copyrighted materials to feed AI systems.

Spirit’s internal records are prized precisely because they are not publicly accessible and span decades of airline-specific operational history. With that kind of proprietary insight, Google could build aviation-focused AI tools and sell high-margin services to other carriers, further entrenching Big Tech’s influence over critical infrastructure.

For conservatives wary of unchecked corporate power and the left-leaning politics of Silicon Valley, the deal is another reminder that AI’s “insatiable desire for fresh training materials” threatens to turn every digital interaction into raw material for unaccountable algorithms. Breitbart News social media director Wynton Hall has written his instant bestseller to serve as the definitive guide on how the MAGA movement can create positions on AI that benefit humanity “without handing control of our nation to the leftists of Silicon Valley or allowing the Chinese to take over the world,” a debate that will only intensify as President Trump’s second administration confronts the growing power of Big Tech at home and abroad.
