Google Maps has begun labeling Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users inside the United States, aligning the tech giant with President Donald Trump’s latest effort to assert American sovereignty in the face of an increasingly hostile Canadian government.

According to Gateway Pundit, the change started appearing over the weekend, making Google the first major digital mapping platform to reflect the President’s directive. The shift comes just days after President Trump signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to adopt “Lake America” as the official U.S. designation for Lake Ontario, the easternmost of the five Great Lakes.

The order mirrors the President’s 2025 decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a move that underscored his America-first approach to geography, trade, and national identity. That earlier rebranding was ultimately embraced by U.S.-based mapping services once federal geographic databases were updated, signaling how quickly private platforms fall in line once Washington sets the standard.

Google has been explicit that it is simply following the federal government’s lead through the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. “People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” the company said, effectively acknowledging a split-screen reality shaped by national policy.

The renaming has become the latest flashpoint in the deepening trade dispute between President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trade talks collapsed earlier this month after Carney walked away from the table, prompting the President to impose tariffs on Canadian goods, with retaliatory measures from Ottawa expected to begin on September 8th.

Carney has tried to turn the naming fight into a broader critique of America’s direction under Trump’s leadership. “We know that America is changing,” Carney said. “Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.”

The Canadian leader doubled down on the traditional name, insisting that “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford echoed that defiance, unveiling a large lakeside sign reading “Lake Ontario Now and Always” and threatening to cut off electricity exports to the United States over the dispute.

While Canadian officials escalate their rhetoric, President Trump has leaned into the symbolism of the new name, sharing an AI-generated video of ducks with his signature hairstyle and semiautomatic weapons guarding a shoreline beneath a “Lake America” sign. The clash over what to call a shared body of water now encapsulates a broader struggle over borders, trade, and national identity, with the White House signaling that, at least on the U.S. side, “Lake America” is here to stay.
