A grieving father whose young daughter was left permanently disabled in a violent car crash allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant has publicly rebuked Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill, accusing them of offering only performative sympathy when television cameras are present.

During a congressional hearing, Marcus Coleman bluntly dismissed expressions of concern from Democrats on the panel. “I reject your guys' sympathy, to be honest with you. There's no way you guys are sorry,” Coleman told lawmakers, challenging what he described as their selective compassion. His testimony underscored a growing frustration among many Americans who believe Washington’s political class shows more concern for protecting progressive immigration policies than for citizens harmed by their consequences, according to Fox News.

Coleman expanded on his criticism in a follow-up interview Thursday with Fox News anchor Trace Gallagher, where he accused Democratic members of Congress of failing to grasp the real-world impact of their policies. “Talking with the Democrat representatives, I mean, the language they speak is ignorance, and it's hard for me to translate what I'm trying to say to them,” he said. “I can explain it all day, I just can't understand it for them.”

His comments followed a contentious CNN segment on crimes involving illegal immigrants, during which liberal podcast host Leigh McGowan dismissed the topic as “exhausting.” Coleman contrasted that media fatigue with the relentless reality he faces at home, describing his own “exhausting” daily struggle caring for his 7-year-old daughter, Dalilah. She was critically injured in 2024 when an 18-wheeler traveling at about 60 mph slammed into the car in which she was riding, leaving her with life-altering injuries that he must now manage around the clock.

Federal authorities later identified the truck driver as Partap Singh, an illegal immigrant from India who had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California. The Department of Homeland Security said Singh was driving at an unsafe speed and failed to stop for traffic and a construction zone before the crash, raising serious questions about vetting, enforcement, and the broader risks posed by lax border and licensing policies. For Coleman, those bureaucratic failures are not abstractions but the direct cause of his daughter’s suffering and his family’s upheaval.

“I work on maybe about four hours of sleep every night, primarily taking care of my daughter during the daytime, trying to work at nighttime and squeeze everything in, so I'm exhausted,” Coleman said. He added that the relentless demands of his new reality make it even harder to accept what he views as indifference and political theater from lawmakers who, in his view, refuse to confront the human cost of open-border policies.

Coleman told the committee that while Democrats were willing to express sympathy in front of the cameras, none had taken the time to contact him privately. “Not one of you guys have ever called me. Not one of you guys ever reached out to me,” he told them. “You guys do it right here while you guys are grandstanding on top of your soapbox.”

“This is when you guys care,” he continued, accusing them of caring only when it serves a political narrative. “Right here inside this room is the only time you guys cared.” His remarks cut against the carefully crafted image of compassion many Democrats project on immigration, suggesting that for victims like his daughter, that compassion ends where the cameras do.

The hearing also revisited the contentious issue of sanctuary cities, which shield many illegal immigrants from federal enforcement and have become a cornerstone of progressive immigration policy. At a previous sanctuary cities hearing, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., openly questioned why the committee continued to examine the matter. “Unfortunately, this hearing is — it's the fourth time in this committee that we've had a hearing on sanctuary cities. The fourth time,” Jayapal said. “And there's many other things that we could be doing other than this.”

Despite the burdens at home, Coleman said he intends to continue speaking out, arguing that his daughter’s condition is a stark reminder of what is at stake in the nation’s immigration debate. “There's no remedy with open borders at all,” he said, insisting that national security and public safety must take precedence over ideological commitments to non-enforcement.

“Leaving your door unlocked at nighttime, you're not gonna sleep safe. Leaving the borders open at nighttime, we're not going to be safe. My daughter is the proof. There's hundreds, if not thousands, of victims right now behind illegal aliens.” For Coleman and many others who share his concerns, the question is not whether immigration should exist, but whether a sovereign nation can afford to ignore its own laws while families like his pay the price.
