Art Garfunkel, the celebrated singer of the iconic duo Simon & Garfunkel, says he is seriously weighing whether to leave the United States because of President Donald Trump’s leadership and the current political climate.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 84-year-old performer was asked about climate change and those presently in power, and his response quickly turned into a broader denunciation of America’s direction under Trump. According to Gateway Pundit, Garfunkel declared, “I don’t like America’s position at all,” framing his discontent as both political and existential.

Garfunkel admitted that his frustration has grown so intense that he has contemplated abandoning the country altogether. “I’m not aboard, and I’m thinking of leaving the country, frankly,” he said, adding, “It’s real that the planet is getting warmer, that the water’s rising, that so many people are starving.”

The singer also used the interview to criticize Trump’s decisive stance on Venezuela, a nation long devastated by socialist mismanagement. “When Donald Trump took over Venezuela, are those the new rules? Just take over a country and run it?” Garfunkel said, casting the administration’s actions in the harshest possible light.

Garfunkel went on to describe his sense of disbelief at the current political order, questioning how the nation might alter its course. “It’s shocking, and you think: how on earth are we gonna change the presidency?” he asked, before expressing a kind of resigned optimism about the future.

He said he finds solace in the fact that Trump’s time in office is finite, even as he remains deeply unsettled by the present. “But Trump won’t last forever,” he said. “So we’ve got to hope.”

His remarks come eight months after U.S. forces successfully captured Venezuelan socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States to face federal charges of international drug trafficking, a move widely applauded by critics of socialism. Last month, Trump announced a landmark deal granting the U.S. majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven Venezuelan oil reserves through a partnership with major oil companies, potentially giving Americans access to a vast new supply of crude.

Despite these developments, which many conservatives view as strategic victories for American security and energy independence, Garfunkel appears so disillusioned with the Trump administration that he is now openly mulling expatriation. He would not be the first celebrity to depart since Trump’s return to power in January 2025, as Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi relocated to the United Kingdom after the 2024 election, and comedian Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland in January 2025, saying she would consider returning only when she believed “it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights.”
