Hunter Biden’s latest attempt at public rehabilitation has taken a predictably chaotic turn, this time through the volatile world of cryptocurrency.

The president’s son, once marketed as a high-priced “consultant” to foreign energy firms and then briefly recast as a suddenly serious avant-garde painter, has now re-emerged as the face of a meme coin called $LAPTOP, a venture that has already left most small investors burned while raising fresh questions about influence, access and basic integrity, according to Western Journal. His re-entry into the political and cultural conversation has been facilitated by podcaster Andrew Callaghan, a figure critics describe as a digital-age carnival barker who “milks human misery” for clicks and views, hardly the sort of steadying presence one would expect for a “recovering drug-and-alcohol addict” trying to rebuild his life and reputation.

Hunter Biden’s earlier forays into influence-peddling — from his lucrative Burisma board seat to his implausible art career — were largely defended or downplayed by establishment media until President Joe Biden’s disastrous June 2024 debate performance made such defenses politically untenable. Since then, the younger Biden’s image makeover has leaned heavily on sympathetic interviews and curated appearances, but the launch of $LAPTOP suggests that the underlying pattern of questionable judgment and opportunism has not changed in any meaningful way.

The $LAPTOP token was rolled out with a slick promotional video and the kind of breathless hype that has become standard in the meme-coin space, even as seasoned observers immediately flagged the obvious risks that “a 4-year-old” could have spotted. Hunter Biden pitched the coin as both a playful rejoinder to Trump-themed cryptocurrencies and a supposed exposé of “what the holes in crypto were,” a claim that now looks more like a preemptive excuse than a serious consumer warning.

From the New York Post: “Four out of five people who bought into Hunter Biden’s new meme coin saw their investments go up in smoke during the cryptocurrency’s spectacular launch-day collapse on Wednesday — even as one mystery trader turned a roughly $250,000 bet into $1.18 million within minutes, The Post has learned.” The paper further reported that “an individual trading under a pseudonym spent about $250,000 to acquire 9,124 of Biden’s $LAPTOP tokens before unloading 8,480 of them minutes later for about $1.18 million, according to a blockchain analysis by Datavault AI.”

“That amounted to a gain of roughly $930,000 before transaction costs,” the Post noted, a windfall so perfectly timed that it immediately raised suspicions of insider advantage or coordinated manipulation. And because of the pseudonymous nature of blockchain transactions, “we may never know who that was,” leaving ordinary investors to absorb the losses while the mystery trader walks away with nearly a million dollars in profit.

Supporters of the president’s son have rushed to insist that this “definitely wasn’t Hunter Biden who profited,” pointing to social media posts and public statements meant to distance him from the suspicious trade. Yet when “a single investor made a cool million off of the pump-and-dump,” as the Post described it, common sense suggests that the “chief suspect is a guy who is apparently so in debt he can’t determine how in debt he is” and who just happened to be the public face of the coin.

The memecoin’s collapse underscores how little has changed in the Biden orbit, where personal responsibility is often deflected and accountability is elusive, even as the family continues to benefit from its proximity to power. Conservatives have long warned that Hunter Biden’s business ventures — from foreign boardrooms to art galleries and now to crypto markets — reflect a broader culture of entitlement and impunity that would be treated far more harshly if the last name were Trump.

Hunter “touted this as an antidote to the Trump memecoins,” presenting himself as a kind of moral counterweight to what he and his allies portray as right-wing grift. “But it was worse, if anything,” because instead of exposing the flaws of the crypto ecosystem from a position of principle, he “touted it as a vehicle to show what the holes in crypto were” and then “by directly exploiting them, yes, he did, although not to the outcome he probably hoped.”

For Americans who value personal accountability, market transparency and equal treatment under the law, the $LAPTOP fiasco is less a surprise than a confirmation of long-standing concerns. “In short: Hunter Biden will always be Hunter Biden, no matter what the financial vehicle,” and the latest debacle suggests that no amount of media spin, podcast appearances or digital token schemes can disguise the pattern of behavior that continues to follow the president’s son.
