A brutal killing in Sacramento has reignited outrage over the Biden administration’s border and immigration policies after authorities confirmed that the suspected murderer was an illegal alien who had previously been detained and then released into the United States.

According to RedState, federal officials now acknowledge that 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, a national of India, was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol in August 2023 after illegally crossing the southern border into Arizona, only to be released into the country under current administration protocols.

He remained free until this week, when Sacramento County authorities say he hunted down and executed a 38-year-old woman he had obsessively stalked and harassed for months, before killing himself as deputies closed in.

“Rohit Rohit, 22, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol after illegally crossing the border into Arizona in August 2023, DHS said,” federal officials confirmed, adding that he was subsequently released and allowed to remain in the United States.

“This illegal alien from India harassed, stalked, and then killed a 38-year-old woman in California, and then took his own life when police caught up to him,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated, underscoring the preventable nature of the crime.

The spokesperson did not mince words about the role of federal policy in the tragedy, declaring, “This tragedy would have been completely avoided if it weren’t for the Biden Administration RELEASING this killer into our country.”

The revelation has intensified criticism of the White House’s approach to border enforcement, with conservatives arguing that lenient catch-and-release practices are directly endangering American communities.

The case itself is chilling even without the immigration angle, involving what authorities describe as a calculated campaign of stalking that culminated in a public execution-style killing outside a busy commercial area.

The murder occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday near a Panera Bread at Northrop and Howe avenues in Sacramento, where Sheriff Jim Cooper said surveillance footage captured Rohit confronting the woman before she tried to flee.

Investigators say Rohit chased her down and opened fire, shooting her multiple times as she attempted to escape.

After she collapsed on the ground, he allegedly walked up to her and shot her in the head at close range, an act that stunned even veteran law enforcement officers.

“Horrific. I’ve seen the video myself. Unimaginable,” Cooper said Wednesday as he described the brutality of the attack.

“This young lady was chased down and gunned down, and then he stands over her and executes her. Unbelievable.”

Authorities say Rohit and the victim had known each other for several years through their employment, though they worked for different companies and were not romantically involved.

Over time, investigators believe, Rohit developed a disturbing fixation that escalated into months of stalking, harassment, and increasingly invasive behavior.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reports that in January the woman discovered an Apple AirTag hidden beneath the hood of her car, a device allegedly planted by Rohit to track her movements.

In another incident, he is accused of deflating one of her tires and then following her to work so that he could conveniently appear and offer to “help,” a manipulative tactic that further alarmed her.

His conduct soon crossed even more serious boundaries, according to detectives.

They say Rohit somehow obtained a copy of the woman’s apartment key and entered her home while she was sleeping, an intrusion she only discovered the following morning.

After she confronted him about the break-in, Rohit allegedly tried to rationalize his actions by claiming he had entered because she had not responded to him and he was worried something might have happened.

The woman initially declined to pursue criminal charges or seek a restraining order, a decision that detectives respected even as they remained in contact with her due to the escalating pattern of behavior.

“We’ve seen this pattern of behavior. We’ve seen kind of where it leads sometimes,” Sacramento County Sheriff’s Lt. Amar Gandhi said, noting that deputies recognized the warning signs of a potentially lethal obsession.

By May, deputies again urged the woman to seek a restraining order, and she ultimately did so, though Rohit allegedly continued to violate boundaries and attempt contact.

On July 29, deputies received a report that Rohit had dropped off random grocery items at the woman’s front door, an apparent violation of the restraining order that underscored his refusal to accept legal or personal limits.

Less than two months later, authorities say, he was lying in wait for her in the Panera parking lot, setting the stage for the fatal encounter.

Investigators report that Rohit parked in the lot shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday, around the time the woman was being dropped off.

He approached and began accosting her, prompting her to try to escape, at which point he allegedly pursued her with a gun and fatally shot her in broad daylight.

Rohit fled the scene, but a witness quickly stepped in to assist law enforcement by photographing his vehicle and calling 911.

Authorities then used the region’s Flock camera system to track the suspect’s car within minutes, a technological tool that proved critical in the rapid identification and pursuit.

“Fortunately, a good witness, a good Samaritan, was there, saw it, took photographs of the suspect’s vehicle and called 911 right away,” Cooper said, praising the citizen’s quick thinking and courage.

Deputies soon confronted Rohit on eastbound Highway 50 at Watt Avenue, where he stopped his vehicle and triggered a standoff that shut down the freeway for hours.

According to officials, the confrontation ended when Rohit died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, depriving the victim’s family of the chance to see him face justice in court.

Local authorities initially reported that Rohit had no known criminal history in Sacramento County and no prior interactions with the sheriff’s office, which made DHS’s later disclosure all the more significant.

Federal officials have now confirmed that Rohit crossed the southern border illegally in Arizona in August 2023 and was apprehended by Border Patrol before being released into the United States during the Biden administration.

That decision, critics argue, placed an unstable and dangerous individual into an unsuspecting community, with no meaningful safeguard for the citizens who would later become his targets.

Although Rohit’s suicide means he will never stand trial, detectives say their work is not over as they continue to reconstruct the events that led to the woman’s murder.

“We can’t give the family the victim back, but we can give them information, help them get closure and really piece the puzzle together on how they got here,” Gandhi said, emphasizing their commitment to the grieving relatives.

The Sacramento case emerges as Democrats in other states double down on policies that prioritize the interests of non-citizens over public safety, even in the face of mounting evidence of the risks.

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul recently pardoned a violent criminal alien rather than allow the matter to proceed to the Supreme Court, where she risked an adverse ruling on the indefinite detention of illegal aliens.

For many Americans, especially those who favor secure borders and the rule of law, these decisions reflect a broader pattern of disregard for the safety of citizens in the name of progressive ideology.

Open borders have deadly consequences, and when elected officials repeatedly release criminal aliens back into communities, it is fair to ask whether they value ideological posturing more than the lives of the people they are sworn to protect.
