President Donald Trump made clear that, despite public appeals, he does not have the legal authority to intervene directly in the criminal case of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy.

The renewed attention on the case followed defense attorney Kevin Reddington’s appearance on “Good Morning America,” where he said he hoped President Donald Trump would consider a pardon for his client, according to Western Journal. Reddington’s plea came after a mistrial was declared in Clancy’s murder trial when a lone juror refused to agree that she should be acquitted on grounds that she was not criminally responsible for the 2023 killings of her three children.

Pressed on Sunday about whether he would consider a pardon, President Trump responded that it was a “very sad situation,” in remarks captured on video and posted to X. “There’s no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” he said, underscoring the gravity of the tragedy and the limits of any outcome.

The president then drew a firm line on the constitutional question, stressing that the matter lies outside his direct reach. “It’s actually a state situation,” Trump said, “not a federal.”

Even as he emphasized those limits, President Trump offered a measure of respect for the defense team. Trump said Reddington was “a good attorney.”

He also signaled that any resolution must come through the state’s legal process, not presidential intervention. “I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out … There is no win there,” Trump said when asked if he would contact the prosecutor, as Reddington has urged.

The president had already weighed in on the case days earlier, calling it “a horrible tragedy” when asked Friday about the trial, according to Fox News. “I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse,” he said, reflecting a law-and-order stance while acknowledging the emotional complexity.

At the same time, he pointed to the inevitability of legal consequences, even if shaped by mental health considerations. “But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be [a] mental institution or jail or something,” he said.

He lamented the prospect of relitigating the case, calling the possibility of another trial “too bad,” according to CBS. Legal experts, however, suggest that the mistrial opens the door to negotiations rather than guaranteeing a full retrial.

Defense attorney Peter Elikann of Boston said plea discussions are likely before any second trial proceeds, according to KABC-TV. “In many cases, the prosecution, after having a deadlocked jury, will kind of say to the defense, ‘Let’s compromise. We’ll break down the charges to something much lesser, and can we agree on that, that you’ll plead to something, a much more minor charge,'” Elikann said.

Yet not all observers are convinced prosecutors will be inclined to scale back their case in such a high-profile matter. Buckmire said it could also be possible that prosecutors will not want to drop any charges against Lindsay Clancy.
