"The fact that people keep coming back to this is so offensive to so many of us," an anonymous ally of Harris expressed to Politico. "They still don't get that the message you're saying to people, to this Democratic Party, is, we prefer a white person."
Another ally voiced a similar sentiment to Politico: "If they think they are going to get through South Carolina bashing an effective and qualified Black woman Vice President — their instincts are as bad as I thought they were."
Harris' 2020 presidential campaign had initially sparked high expectations among many lawmakers and voters. Despite gaining momentum after a primary debate where she criticized Biden for his comments about his collaboration with pro-segregationist lawmakers, her campaign eventually lost steam. Nevertheless, her appointment as Biden's running mate was lauded by many Democrats, particularly among the party's Black voters, a sentiment that only intensified after her election as Vice President.

The Vice President's first two years in office were dominated by the Coronavirus crisis and a balanced Senate, which required her presence in Washington to break ties on crucial votes.
