In a chilling development, a Florida resident has been indicted on murder charges following the discovery of what authorities suspect to be the remains of a missing family in his backyard fire pit.

The victims, believed to be a couple and their two young children, were last seen alive on June 12 in Hudson County, as reported by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

According to American Military News, the accused, Rory Atwood, had been cohabitating with the family at the time of their disappearance. The family comprised of Phillip Zilliot II, Rain Mancini, and their two children, 6-year-old Karma Zilliot, and 5-year-old Phillip Zilliot III. The alarm was raised when a woman requested a welfare check at the family's home, citing a disturbing video call her brother had received from Atwood. The call allegedly showed what appeared to be bodies and a pool of blood, with Atwood claiming he needed assistance to burn some trash.

Upon their initial visit to Atwood's residence, law enforcement officers found nothing out of the ordinary, except for an "actively smoldering and smoking" fire pit in his backyard. However, a subsequent visit was prompted by another individual who claimed Atwood had confessed to murdering the family of four.

Atwood, during his interaction with the authorities, claimed he had evicted the family due to their inability to pay rent, and they had left with two weeks' worth of belongings. However, a thorough search of the property and the fire pit led to a gruesome discovery. A cadaver dog unearthed "small skeletal remains," "human long bone fragments," and "apparent human vertebrae," as per documents obtained by Tampa Bay 10.

In a shocking twist, Atwood, who had known the couple since high school, confessed to killing Zilliot and Mancini during subsequent interviews with law enforcement. He claimed that Zilliot had attacked him with a knife, leading to a struggle over a handgun, which accidentally discharged, killing Mancini. He then admitted to shooting Zilliot twice in the head. However, Atwood denied killing the children, alleging that the couple had done so. He did confess to disposing of their bodies in the fire pit.

As of Wednesday, the remains found in the fire pit have not been formally identified, but authorities are confident they belong to the missing family. Atwood, who pleaded not guilty to the murder of a John Doe on Monday, is currently incarcerated and being held without bail.
