Steve Bannon, a former adviser to President Donald Trump, has been ordered to report to prison on July 1, following the Supreme Court's refusal to delay his four-month sentence.

Bannon, a prominent figure in the far-right media landscape, had sought an emergency stay to avoid incarceration while he pursued an appeal.

According to The Independent, Bannon was held in contempt of Congress after he ignored subpoenas to testify before the House select committee investigating the January 6 assault on the Capitol. This sentence echoes that of Peter Navarro, another former Trump aide, who became the first individual connected to Trump to be incarcerated in relation to the events of January 6. Navarro, like Bannon, had also declined to comply with a subpoena from the committee investigating the attack and the subsequent reactions from Trump and his allies.

Bannon's initial sentencing took place in October 2022, but was deferred pending his appeal. However, his conviction was affirmed last month, and earlier this month, a federal judge concurred with prosecutors who contended that there was "no legal basis" for Bannon to evade imprisonment.

The narrative surrounding the Capitol attack has been a point of contention among House Republicans, some of whom have sought to reinterpret the events and challenge the convictions of hundreds associated with the incident. They have urged federal courts to intervene. This week, House Speaker Mike Johnson, whom Bannon once derisively referred to as a "revolting loser," and other GOP leaders consented to submit briefs to a federal appeals court in support of Bannon's efforts to overturn his conviction.

Johnson stated that House leadership was preparing to "withdraw" the committee's findings, alleging that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had "abused her authority" in assembling its members. Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk submitted a brief directly to the Supreme Court, arguing that the House select committee had "improperly asserted to the House that Mr. Bannon refused to appear for a duly executed deposition." Loudermilk, represented by a lawyer from the Trump-aligned America First Legal Foundation, contended that the entire prosecution process against Bannon was flawed and should be dismissed as a matter of law.

Last week, a group of House Republicans proposed a resolution to rescind Bannon's subpoena and his contempt of Congress recommendation. Bannon, speaking to reporters outside a federal courthouse in Washington after a judge upheld his conviction, claimed the actions against him were attempts to suppress the MAGA movement, grassroots conservatives, and President Trump. "Not only are we winning, we are going to prevail," he declared. "There's not a prison built or jail built that will shut me up."

Bannon now joins a group of Trump allies who have served time for various offenses, including obstruction, campaign finance violations, and fraud, all linked to Trump's 2016 campaign, his real estate ventures, and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Trump, on his social media platform Truth Social, labeled Bannon's detention a "total and complete American tragedy" and called for the prosecution of members of the January 6 committee.
