In a recent debate with Donald Trump, President Joe Biden's performance was described as "weak," "lethargic," and "painful" by CNN's Van Jones, a liberal commentator and former Special Advisor to Barack Obama.

According to the Daily Mail, Jones has previously expressed concerns about Biden's ability to lead, suggesting that his lackluster performance in the debate has only amplified these worries.

Jones' disappointment in Biden was palpable as he recounted the debate, stating, "That was painful. I love Joe Biden, I worked with Joe Biden, he didn't do well at all, he did not do well at all." He further noted that Biden's defeat was evident within the first three minutes of the debate, where the president appeared weak and raspy.

The debate, which Jones referred to as "the old man vs. the con man," was a critical test for Biden to restore the confidence of the country and his base. However, Jones lamented, "He had a test tonight to restore the confidence of the country, of the base and he failed."

This lackluster performance has reportedly led to a wave of panic among Democrats, with Jones suggesting that the party may need to "figure out a different way forward" in time for the convention in August. He expressed, "There is time for this party to figure out a different way forward, if he will allow us to do that, but that was not what we needed from Joe Biden and is personally painful for a lot of people."

The debate was particularly challenging for Biden, who at 81, needs to convince voters of his physical and mental fitness for a second term. His performance was marred by a hoarse voice, jumbled words, and repeated stammering, which Trump capitalized on, hitting back hard at the president's repeated fumbles.

One of Biden's most notable missteps came in response to a Medicare question, where he produced a faltering, bumbling moment that's likely to be repeated throughout the campaign. Trump seized the opportunity to criticize Biden, stating, "That's right, he did beat Medicare, he beat it to death. And he's destroying Medicare."

Despite Biden's attempts to regain ground by attacking Trump on his alleged derogatory comments about dead American soldiers and his felony conviction in New York, Trump was ready for these lines of attack. He swiftly redirected the conversation towards Hunter Biden's felony conviction and claimed that he was only the victim of a highly politicized persecution.

This debate has raised serious questions about Biden's ability to lead and his fitness for a second term. His performance has left many Democrats in a state of panic and has led to calls for a different approach moving forward. Whether Biden can regain the confidence of his base and the country remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: his performance in this debate was a significant setback for his campaign and a cause for concern among his supporters.
