According to Newsweek, the American Muckrakers PAC, a political watchdog group committed to "holding elected officials accountable," has declared a settlement in its defamation lawsuit against Colorado's Republican Representative Lauren Boebert.

The organization's President, David Wheeler, accused Boebert of making false and harmful statements about the PAC in 2022.

Wheeler stated, "The Honorable Kathryn A. Starnella, Magistrate Judge in Federal District Court in Denver, stated in her written opinion that Boebert defamed me five times." He added, "Judge Starnella agreed with me that our donors should never have been threatened with being sued by Boebert. We were victorious in this case and I'm thankful to all our donors and supporters and their steadfast backing."

During Boebert's reelection campaign, Wheeler's PAC published several controversial articles about her, which she refuted. She accused the PAC of "sloppy, reckless, and wildly irresponsible actions," and threatened a lawsuit that never materialized. However, Wheeler claimed that her threats of litigation led to a significant drop in donations to his PAC, causing financial harm. Consequently, he filed a lawsuit seeking redress for alleged defamation, trade libel, tortious interference with contract, tortious interference with prospective advantage, civil conspiracy, and abuse of process.

This month, Boebert attempted to have the lawsuit dismissed, but Judge Starnella denied her request. Starnella concluded that Boebert's "threats to sue Plaintiffs' sponsors and donors are unprotected" by state law "because they were neither made in good faith nor in serious contemplation of litigation."

In a further development, the American Muckrakers PAC is calling for Boebert's firearms to be confiscated pending an investigation into allegations of illegal drug use. The PAC has written to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and other Colorado officials, urging them to investigate Boebert. The allegations include claims that Boebert has used methamphetamine and marijuana, and press reports that she was allegedly refused alcohol service at a GOP event in December.

She was initially elected to represent the 3rd Congressional District, which includes the rural, conservative-leaning eastern part of the state and some more competitive Denver suburbs. Boebert received 43.5 percent of the vote in the primary, as reported by the Associated Press.
