Supporters of Bernie Sanders are basking in the aftermath of President Joe Biden's debate performance against Donald Trump, a performance that has stirred up unease among Democrats, with less than five months to go before a crucial election rematch.

This information comes according to Newsweek.

Briahna Joy Gray, who served as Sanders' press secretary in 2020, was among the many who voiced their thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter. She wrote, "All subsequent disappointments aside, I wonder how the people who kneecapped Bernie's 2020 campaign are feeling about now."

Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, also took to X to express his support for Sanders, writing, "Let's get this party started right. I officially nominate Bernie Sanders."

Biden, now 81, has faced criticism for a performance that failed to alleviate concerns about his age, his ability to defeat 78-year-old Trump once more, and his capacity to guide the U.S. for another four years if he emerges victorious. The president has been criticized for what some perceive as a lack of enthusiasm, including perplexing responses that Trump capitalized on in his own retorts.

Sanders, a longstanding figure in Washington, put up a strong challenge against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic primary and gained national recognition. Four years later, he initially led against Biden in the primary before the incumbent received a surge of support in South Carolina—largely credited to a Black Democratic coalition. However, this support base has recently shown signs of wavering, with approximately 30 percent of Black Americans stating in a new poll from the Siena College Research Institute that they would vote for Trump.

Kathryn Rose Fisher, another supporter, wrote, "Never forget that the only reason Biden was on that stage tonight is because in 2020, after Bernie won the first few primaries, the DNC panicked and demanded that every other candidate drop out and back Biden (including Buttigieg, who was polling way ahead of Biden)."

Randy Bryce, a union ironworker and former Democratic nominee for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district in the 2018 midterm elections, questioned the age argument against Sanders, writing, "Bernie was too old???"

Sanders' supporters pointed out that the independent Vermont senator was "trending in the top 10 [on X] for a presidential debate he was not in." Sanders, who is actually older than Biden, will turn 83 on September 8.
